Phinally...The 25 Year Wait is Over!

The Philadelphia Phillies are the 2008 World Champions!

No words can accurately describe Philadelphia fans' pain over the past 25 (yes, a quarter of century) years, but this comes darn close...

"But most of all, this one’s for all the fans who stuck with this team and this city through thick and thin, through 90-loss seasons and pennant race heartbreak, through the 10,000th loss and 7 back with 17 to play, from the Vet to the Bank & the Linc, from the Spectrum to the CoreStates/FU/Wacko Center, from Randall to McNabb, Barkley to AI, Hextall to the Legion of Doom, Buddy’s Boys to Macho Row, Claude Lemieux to Joe Jurevicius, T.O. to Smarty Jones, the Fog Bowl to the 46-Hour Reign Delay, from Joe Carter to the Detroit Red Army to Kobe & Shaq to the Super Bowl Puke, through 15 years without an NL Pennant, 28 years without a World Series title, 25 years without a major sports championship, 100 SEASONS as the City of Losers. To the fans who booed and bitched and complained but never gave up. To the fans who said “Wait till next year” but deep down feared that we and our children would grow up and grow old and “next year” would never come. Breathe easy. The drought is over. “Next year” is here. This one’s for you. It was worth the wait."

The Cheesesteak of Suffering No More?

According to my Cheesesteak of Suffering widget, it has been 9280 days since the last Philadelphia Championship. That means I was two-years old the last time any Philadelphia professional sports team won a national title. And to be honest, I can't exactly remember that 76ers championship! Can the 2008 Phillies change all that? We shall see. Being the Negadelphian that I was raised to be, I must admit that I will never believe it until I see it. That means only after the very last out will I really believe. Until then, we are enjoying Phillies baseball through the end of October. A luxury I've only had one other time in my life.

I guess the only thing fans can do now is enjoy the ride! Here are some of my Dad's pictures from game 4 when the Phillies won 10 to 2 :

Wedding: The Proposal!

So, it's official...Jared and I are engaged! I believe I have finally informed ALL of my friends and family about our engagement so it is safe to discuss it here without feeling as though I have slighted anyone. The crazy wedding planning is underway, but I thought I would start from the beginning.

How it happened...

Jared and I were planning to enjoy the long Labor Day weekend in New York City, but at the last minute, we decided to go up to Boston to visit his family. We headed up on Saturday afternoon, and along the way Jared mentioned that he had to stop by Castle Island, a beautiful park in South Boston that overlooks the Ocean, to pick up a Fantasy Baseball check (still not sure if I fully understand what that meant!) from his friend who was fishing at Castle Island. My first thought was who goes fishing off of Castle Island?!

Well, we finally pulled into the parking lot as the sun was setting (perfect timing a I found out later). We got out and started to walk and walk and walk some more. Finally, I thought that this was getting ridiculous, where was Marty?! That's when Jared said it was just a plan hatched to get me out there and he pulled the ring out of his pocket.

It was an appropriate spot given that Jared and I had visited Castle Island on many occasions to enjoy the sunset and watch the planes take off from Logan. He said that he had wanted to take me to the first place we met...a classroom on Boston College's campus where we took a class called Social Movements together. However, given that it was move-in weekend at BC and he couldn't actually remember the exact classroom we had met in (not surprising for a boy who barely made it to any class he had registered for), he opted for a nice setting that we had enjoyed together in the past.

I have to give him a lot of credit on the ring! It's a simple, classic Tiffany ring that I think matches my style and personality perfectly. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me, but a nice young women saw Jared's proposal and took our picture.

Over the past eight and half years there have been up and downs, but we are finally on the same path and in the right place to be with each other. We've definitely grown together and know each other very well. So, here's to the next step in our relationship! Cheers!

Groundhog Day in October?

Wait! I thought we celebrated Groundhog Day in February?! But low and behold, a groundhog has been sunny himself on our deck for the past two months. Well, at least we think he's a groundhog. Others have suggested a hedgehog, beaver, or gigantic chipmunk! But, we're pretty sure he's a groundhog. He's no Punxsutawney Phil, but he's got spunk, eating all of the wilting flowers and lounging under the grill. So, since he's decided to stick around we've decided he needs a name, an appropriate name. The verdict is Moorestown Maury. He's living in Moorestown, and well, he just looks like a Muary. We've discovered he lives under our deck steps, and it seems like he has set up shop for the winter. So, it may not be February, but Moorestown Maury is here to say, and hey, maybe in February he'll emerge from under our deck steps and tell us--just the Coppola family--if spring is here or winter is sticking around for another six weeks.

IMC: PR Lesson from the VP Candidates - Stay on Message!

In an effort to develop more professional credibility in my marketing career, I will be periodically posting communications-related material.

So here we go…

On October 2nd, the country tuned in to the hotly anticipated vice presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden and Governor Sarah Palin. Experts agreed that to succeed Sarah Palin had to know her facts, and Joe Biden had to know when to stop. Tough challenges for both candidates, as Palin has been criticized for her struggle with policy nuances in recent interviews with the media, and Biden has been described as condescending and patronizing, particularly damaging qualities when facing a sympathetic female opponent.

Before the vice presidential candidates had even left the stage, pundits were already weighing in with their analysis and commentary, and as expected, each party claimed victory for their candidate. However, whether you agree with Joe Biden or Sarah Palin, a key public relations lesson to take away from this vice presidential debate is: STAY ON MESSAGE!

The night was all about public relations, never public policy. Each candidate effectively communicated his and her prepared talking points and personality. In fact, Saturday Night Live’s recent spoof of the vice presidential debate mocks both Palin and Biden for these qualities, but also demonstrates that body gestures like Sarah Palin’s wink, key words like “maverick,” and repetition of phrases like “I repeat, 41% of the time,” kept both candidates on message and reinforcing their key points.

Governor Sarah Palin focused on directing the audience’s attention forward to a McCain-Palin administration not on the past and the Bush-Cheney administration. She repeated words like “maverick,” which she used to describe her running mate John McCain and herself that stuck in the minds of her audience. Palin spoke deliberately to “Joe Six Packs” and “Hockey Moms,” ordinary citizens in Anytown, USA, and she related to her audience when she reinforced her own role as a hockey mom, mother to a new baby with special needs, and wife in a middle class family.

Senator Joe Biden spoke about his thirty years of experience in the Senate. He argued this experience would bring much value to Barack Obama’s administration, which has been criticized for its inexperience. Just like Palin, he used repetition to drill his points into the minds of viewers. Biden also focused on his integrity and ethics, reminding people of his personal tragedy of losing his wife and daughter in car accident, which connected him to the audience who could relate to loss and sympathize with him.

Since both Biden and Palin would be number twos in an administration, being liked is very important for both of them. Both candidates displayed a friendly personality and remained civil to each other throughout the course of the debate. They established a connection with the audience by appearing approachable and easy to relate to, and they looked straight into the camera—straight into the eyes of their audience—throughout their responses in an effort to speak directly to voters watching at home. When they disagreed on an issue, rather than attack one another or stray from the matter at hand with jabs at each other, they hit their talking points again to stay on message—a great public relations tip for all of us trying to persuade our audience.

Thankful for Maybe

Today, the Dow Industrials had its worst-ever weekly slide. In the face of panic and anxiety, I think it is still important to be thankful for what we do have and what the stock market can never take away from us. This excerpt comes from the Encyclopedia of Ordinary Life by Amy Krouse Rosenthal:

"I'm thankful for my health, my childhood, and spell check. I'm thankful for our new hot-water tank and how we no longer have to coordinate our dishwashing with our bathing. I'm thankful for the wide range of flavors potato chips come in--mesquite barbecue in particular. For platform shoes. For coincidences. I'm thankful for all the people who ever left, in those dishes by the cashier, a penny I later used. That I don't know everything people say behind my back. I'm thankful I was born after the advent of indoor plumbing, and after the popularity of corsets. I'm thankful for insect repellent, nonstick pans, and Velcro. I'm thankful that people in real life don't spontaneously break into song like they do in musicals, and that some weeds look like flower, and that at the end of a really bad day there is sleep. I'm thankful for maybe."

And I'd like to add, I'm thankful today for lean cuisines, random text messages from Mike and Phillies playoff games!

My First Post!

It's my first day as a blogger! I'm using this space to share my thoughts and information about all aspects of my life. Hopefully, this blog can also keep family and friends up to speed on where I am and what I am doing. Nothing like the Internet to keep us all connected even when we're all so far apart.
